Australia negotiate Scotland

by SixandOut on March 15th, 2007

Australia made no mistakes in whooping Scotland in their opening World Cup matches. That there would be any other outcome was never really on the cards, especially when Scotland inserted Australia who went on to rack up 334 with ease, including a century from skipper Ricky Ponting. Despite a bright start and a 72-ball fifty from Smith, Scotland were never really in the hunt, and were eventually bowled out for 131, 203 runs behind. Australia might have hoped to bowl them out even more cheaply, but Brett Lee replacement Shaun Tait has yet to find the sort of form that will be of any real worry to the top order of the the bigger teams. McGrath is still as reliable as ever, but Brad Hogg is no replacement for Shane Warne, despite an entertaining 40 off 15 balls at the close of the Australian innings.

Scotland will feel no shame nor embarassment in their defeat and rightly so, as they performed admirably against the best side in the world. That their target was only 334 is a credit to how well they bowled and fielded.

Australia did enough to get through, but their worry now ought not to be whether Symonds can get fit to strengthen their batting line-up, it’s whom out of their pool of bowlers is going to fill the very large hole left by the absent Warne and Lee.
