Six and Out - Some Serious Cricket

Brisbane: Day 4: Too little too late

by SixandOut on November 27th, 2006

There’s not much to be said for the state of the game, and despite Paul Collingwood and KP salvaging a bit of pride for the English, it came too late - in fact, in true England style - when the game is lost, we’ll start to play. Man, I’m getting cynical.

There were plenty of positives from their second innings - Collingwood looked in good form and proved my previous comment about him wrong. And KP - well, 92 is 92, even if it was a bit scratchy. We at least saw a glimmer of the type of thing of which he is capable. For the short period that Flintoff was batting, he was hitting the ball quite sweetly, but the brevity of the innings will not do his confidence any good. It’s lucky he’s such a damn fine bowler. I noticed when he was batting how much respect he garners from the Aussies. For example, Brett Lee bowled him an absolute snorter that more or less split Fred’s nose hair. Brett Lee looked down the pitch, hands on hips and grimly smiled a bit, turned round and returned to his mark. Had that been any other batsmen, Brett Lee would have unleashed a torrent of sledgery.

Perhaps the most positive aspect of the 4th day was the glimpse that Australia’s bowlers, Shane Warne in particular aren’t infallible. Collingwood and KP didn’t just fend them away, they moreorless beat them out of the park. And McGrath was suffering from a sore heel (and Ponting from a side strain) can only bode well for the rest of the series. At 5 down with a day to bat, there’s no question about the outcome of this game (there’s no chance of KP and Geraint Jones batting a whole day) but there was at least a glimmer of sunshine in an otherwise very cloudy sky.

Footnote: What was the deal with KP and Shane Warne’s slagging match? Yes - Warne shouldn’t have thrown the ball at KP - correction - he should have thrown the ball more accurately to Gilchrist and KP did well to emergency fend it away (could they have run overthrows?) - no, I’m talking about Sky Sports electing to place that funny blur bubble thing over KP’s mouth as he was swearing at Warne? I want to know what kind of vulgarity he is capable of!
