Six and Out - Some Serious Cricket

Cricket - an English Icon

by SixandOut on August 2nd, 2006

pa0005480.jpgSave all the jokes - we know we invented cricket and we know that pretty much everyone has spent the last 20 years beating us at it. It’s all very embarassing, and things are changing, and yahda yahda yahda. But nonetheless, Cricket has been indelibly marked as part of English Heritage, well at least as far as Icons are concerned.

It’s a website that houses a collection of Icons of true English-ness, with the likes of Fish and Chips, the London Doubledecker Routemaster Bus and the Mini

So what of its Cricket Icon? There's an interesting piece on the origins of cricket and the home of Cricket - Lords. Other areas of the site seems a little unresearched, particularly in respect to its insistence that cricket is only a Gentleman’s game played by toffy-nosed snobs at the likes of Eton College. And whomever wrote that site clearly doesn’t understand the rules of cricket - his description is even more bamboozling than my joke explanation. But if you’re looking for gentle intro the sport of cricket, the site is worth a quick, open-minded, look.

Cricket has some great icons. The combination of green and white, the heavy roller, the clichéd sound of leather on willow (i’ll always stop what I’m doing if I hear that sound) and the feel of a lawn like outfield under your feet on a sunny day.

Umm that’s enough attempts at being poetic I think.

I came across this blog while I was doing some online research. Being from the States, I never learned the rules of cricket or understood anything about the game. Anyway, I\’ve been reading some of your past articles and think this will be a great resource for me. Looking forward to learning more about the game!
