England close in… supposedly.
Apparently, England are on the verge of victory. Inevitably that link will break when the BBC update their story, but nonetheless they think England can still do this. And two wickets in the morning session have inched the team a little bit closer. But whatever the outcome of the match, there have been some less than positive aspects to the play. England spanked 550 in a day and a half and then wiped out the Sri Lankan first innings without breaking a sweat.
So why, pres tell, couldn’t we do it again? It was the same pitch… same bowlers… same batsman… what changed? I’ll tell you.
(Yes, that was a rhetorical question, but ironically, I have an answer.)
England got complacent… cocky, even.
“We’re great, you’re not, in fact why don’t you just give up now, so we can all go down the pub?”.
The Sri Lankans had other ideas. Whilst England made a total balls up of bowling Sri Lanka out again, the likes of quality batsman Mahela Jayawardene quietly got on with the job at hand. And even when he was given out by a brand new dismissal (being caught off your sweater), he’d probably done enough to put the shits into England for the rest of the tour.
