England struggle to lose

by SixandOut on January 19th, 2007

_42469165_2loye270.jpgIt will come as little or no surprise to anyone that in what can only be described as yet another match between England and Australia, England lost. Again. See, no surprise. In fact, anyone who didn’t watch it could quite easily, on the basis of the scoreline, dismiss it as just another England performance. In many respects, it was, England limped to 155 all out in 42 overs with only newbie Mal Loye doing anything of any merit, with a tremendous slog sweep off Brett Lee for six. Ed Joyce and Paul Nixon are still not yet enjoying their International cricket with a couple more sorry performances from them.

Tasked with scoring just 156 in 50 overs, you’d have been forgiven for thinking that Australia would see it off in 20 overs. In fact, they did their best to lose it. Some quality bowling for the inconsistent Lewis and Anderson saw Australia pegged back to 40-odd for 4, and later 100-6. At one point it “was so on”, with Chris Tremlett looking in good form. But then ‘Mr Cricket’ Mike Hussey did his thing and saw the Australians home with 12 overs to spare. A minor scare but barely a blip.

And therein lies the problem for England. When the boys are firing, such as Anderson and Lewis were today, they can be as good as anyone. But it seems impossible for both a) the whole team to be firing at the same time, and b) for it to be done with any sort of consistency. Another 50 runs on the board for England, and the win would have a realistic possibility. The main question, then, is can England rectify this before the World Cup?
