Gilly’s snark at Captain Clarke
Eat Cricket, Drink Cricket, Sleep Cricket
Things were looking good for Michael Clarke. First, Lara Bingle and now, T20 captaincy, but there seem to be plenty of sour grapes around.
Adam Gilchrist isn’t happy apparently and lost no time in admonishing Clarke.
I’m reluctant to assume that he (Clarke) has automatically got the job and I don’t think he assumes that either.
When Gilly speaks, we listen. He might be right after all. When Kumble can do it, there’s no reason Hussey can’t do it, but really, since Ponting is going to be around for some more years, Hussey or Gilly taking on as captain is quite unlikely.
All in all, appointing Clarke as T20 captain is not a bad move at all. If nothing else, we’d at least know if he’s fit for the real job at all.
But it was interesting how Symonds reacted to this development.
I didn’t realise the plan the selectors had for the Twenty20 side so I didn’t put my hand up for the captaincy.
Roy has been pretty bold in expressing his viewpoints in the recent past, and this comes as no surprise actually. He’s trying to be sweet on Pup, but I can see he has green eyes.
What are your views on Clarke?

My problem with Pup is similar to that with Ponting, these guys don’t get practice captaining with their states because they get promoted to the australian side so early.

I don’t know how it works in Australia, but T20 is just the right kind of place to check out some players and their suspected abilities, including captaincy.
The trannsition from T20 to full-time captaincy is not given for the personnel in the T20 format will be slightly different from even the 50-50 version, let alone test matches.
Quite a few of the Australian players mentioned are not automatic choices for T20 two years from now. Then, Australia has, by and large, been inclined to make some changes to a team which hasn’t come out champion. This too will count towards the presence of some of the current members next year or maybe the year after in that team.
UJ’s point is well taken - some of the young bright stars do not get a chance to captain their sides because they are directly inducted to the higher levels. earlier, 50-50 was the only place where they could be tested out for captaincy potential, now another alternative is available in the form of T20, which is still looked upon by the cricketing world as a bit of nursery cricket.
I think this is a good move for it alerts Michael Clarke to a greater role in future and urges him to assume grteater responsibility in longer games. He’s a marked man, like Ponting was, and just tough luck on others that they come in second. T20 captaincy doesn’t rule out captaincy in other versions for others. It is unfortunate for them that Ricky is young and fit as well. Ponting too was ODI captain alongside Waugh who was captain for tests. There must have been older players then…more senior, who might have felt similarly.
