Inzy quits
Inzamam-Ul-Haq has quit one day cricket and resigned as captain of the Pakistan test side. This is the latest upset in a long list of problems to hit the Pakistani cricket team, starting with the forfeiture of the test match at The Oval last year and culminating yesterday with the death of their coach, Bob Woolmer, after Pakistan crashed out of the World Cup in the group stages. Pakistan’s final match of the World Cup is against Zimbabwe on Thursday which will be Inzy’s last match in the one day format. Whilst it’s pointless for them, the result could still effect whom out of Zimbabwe and Ireland go through to the Super Eight.
A number of critics have questioned the timing of Inzy’s decision, referring specifically to the news about Bob Woolmer and the fact that Inzy’s announcement came out a press conference 3 hours later, to discuss the Woolmer situation. Inzy defended himself saying that he’d already made up his mind, and that his announcement would have been insignificant whenever it came in light of recent events.
I disagree with the critics and feel that Inzy was not wrong in making his announcement. On the outside, it certainly looks very insensitive, but one can only wonder what a man like Inzy must have been feeling at that time. His demeanour on the field had really said enough and that one thing after another had ultimately led to enough being enough. When anyone gets in that state of mind, it’s incredibly difficult to keep things from boiling over, and I feel it’s impossible to say what might have happened had he been forced to keep it to himself. The way it stands now, Inzy might be able to quietly slip away from the captaincy and the one day game with a minimal of fuss. Perhaps he is using Bob Woolmer’s death as a blanket to divert attention, but sometimes, that’s what people need. Insensitive, perhaps, but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t care.
