Six and Out - Some Serious Cricket

Melbourne : Day 2 : Aussies surge for 4-0

by SixandOut on December 27th, 2006

I didn’t make any predictions for Day 2 and I was right to not, since Day 2 panned out more or less exactly as you would reasonably have expected it. There was an outside chance that England might have created something magical, and in the morning session it nearly happened, as Harmison, Flintoff, Hoggard and Mahmood did well to reduce Australia to 84-5. But in inimitable Australian fashion, they didn’t roll over and die as England might have. Matt Hayden and Andrew Symonds put on a partnership worth over 250, each of them scoring 150’s. Hayden was out late in the day, but Symonds remained not out on 154 with gloryboy Warne accompanying him, with the Australian total on 372 for 7. It was perhaps another tale of England letting go of the advantage, but coupled with some questionable umpiring decisions, some dodgy captaincy and some Australian stubbornness, it was pretty much just another day in the office for this Ashes series. Even blaming it on someone pinching the England bowling plans won’t cut the mustard.

This match has developed in to another result game, and at this juncture there’s really only one outcome. With Australia leading by 200 runs going in to Day 3, even an inspired bowling display tomorrow morning will only get the England openers to the crease faster, a task that I doubt they’re envying. Australia will likely do their best to increase the lead to 400 as quickly as possible, and give themselves a couple of days to bowl at England. I’m now virtually devoid of the mental strength required to gleam a positive and say that anything is possible, but at this moment in time, it’s only looking one way, and that’s 4-0.
