New idea for the CB Trophy

by SixandOut on January 22nd, 2007

It’s fair to say that this poor excuse for a tournament, which seems to have a completely unnecessary number of “qualifiers”, and then three finals, is becoming a little farcical. In fact, it’s no longer a question of who will win. In fact, I’m not sure it was ever a question of who would win. It will be (and was always going to be) Australia. Instead, it’s a question of which of England and New Zealand will get to play Australia an extra three times. Consider the table, as it stands now.

  Pd W L NR Pts
Australia 4 4 - - 18
England 3 1 2 - 4
New Zealand 3 - 3 - 0

And there’s still 5 games left to play, before the finals, starting with England vs New Zealand tonight. Should England win, the teams in the final will already be decided, irrespective of the results in any of the remaining games. So rather than this being a tournament to decide who is the best team, it’s now a tournament to see if anyone can actually beat Australia.

So maybe, just for a giggle, the last few games should be Australia vs England/New Zealand. And I’m not suggesting a best team out of England/New Zealand, I’m suggesting England and New Zealand vs Australia. That’s right, 22 vs 11, a veritable cricketing Royal Rumble, if you will. “We” get 22 men on the field at once, we get 21 wickets, heck why not just double everything up - we get 100 overs to bat and can play two bowlers at once.

My money would still be on Australia.

[…] England did the unthinkable: they actually played some good cricket. The net result: They Beat Australia. And considering that really, that’s all this trophy is about, it’s a Big Thing. Most surprising, however, was that England actually played the type of cricket of which we knew they were always capable, but have totally failed to demonstrate throughout this Ashes tour. Australia did feel like they were gifting the win, but considering the point of Australian cricket is to beat the English, then it’s hard to conclude that they may have actually let England win. Besides, it’s much more satisfying to think that England actually handed Australia a defeat for a change. […]
