Shane Warne : 700 wickets
Congratulations to Shane Warne who became the first man to take 700 Test wickets. It really was the dream setting: home ground, 90,000 people, last test and 700 wickets. Andrew Strauss played all around a flighted top spinner. Shane took off for a celebration, which ironically seemed to be copied from the new boy of the spinning world, Monty Panesar. The ground erupted, and the applause lasted for several minutes.
Whilst watching it, I actually became a little saddened that he’s leaving the game. He’s been the nemesis of, well, virtually every International cricketer for as long as I can remember, and although when he leaves the playing field will level out a bit, it is going to be a huge shame to lose him from the game. He truly is a master, one of all the all-time greats, and of course it’s sad to see it come to an end. It seems like the contest between him and KP had only just got going, and now it’ll be cut short with no obvious victor.
It seems a video of the 700th wicket hasn’t yet been put on the web, so instead, here’s a scene from an episode of Neighbours in which Shane makes an appearance.

When Monty scores a hundred in England’s second innings at Melbourne, it will be plastered all over this blog.
