Six and Out - Some Serious Cricket

Sri Lanka 1 : England 0

by SixandOut on May 15th, 2006

England yet again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. You saw it, you’ve all read the reports. There’s nothing complex about it. England threw it away. OK, so England didn’t actually lose - the match was drawn. But in the face of it - this is a victory for Sri Lanka. 300 odd runs down and following on - yet the England bowlers couldn’t knock over 8 batsman in three days. England’s fielding was piss-poor, spurning 9 chances to wrap the match up. We don’t need any more proof of how critical taking catches is.

Paul Collingwood will be praying he gets yet another chance to prove himself with the bat, because it’s certain that his two dropped catches were instrumental in the outcome of the game. More questions will be asked of Geraint Jones - maybe it is time to hark back to the good ol’ days when a wicket-keeper is in the side for being a wicket-keeper - if he can bat as well then it’s a bonus.

Questions may even be asked of He Who Can Do No Wrong. But ultimately it’s telling that if you can’t knock over a Sri Lanka tail, then how do you expect to remove an Australian one?
