The mob speaks: Monty in; Giles out!
There’s no disputing it. It has been said for months now - Monty Panesar should have been in the squad ahead of Giles. Heck, I’m struggling to remember the last person, besides Fletcher, who actually backs Giles’ selection. But seeing as Fletcher is in charge, Giles got the nod, Panesar got the drinks tray, and England are 2-nil down in an Ashes series.
And despite Monty not getting the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, which is a travesty in my book, it doesn’t matter because Fletcher cannot possibly ignore the boomingly loud voice from those people who are as pissed off as I am about the series so far and the inclusion of Giles in the side.
Those cheeky chappies, well Nicky Campbell, at Radio Five Live have organised a petition to see Monty included in the Third Test at Perth. See for yourself at the Five Live Breakfast Petition! (warning, the page takes a while to load). As I check it at the moment, there are 1687 electronic signatures. 1687 people united in their call for Monty to be in the side. 1687 who say Giles should go.
Come on Fletcher! Do the right thing.
* It would be 1688 signatures on the petition, but when I tried to add mine, I was told I wasn’t allowed. Apparently using a comment form to make a comment isn’t the way to do things over there.
** Thanks to Boony for the heads up.
