What is the net run rate?
It’s looking increasingly likely that the final positions of the the Super 8’s and, importantly, the order in which they line up in the semi-finals will be decided by the net run rate (since several teams look likely to finish on the same number of points). According to the laws of cricket:
A team’s net run rate is calculated by deducting from the average runs per over scored by that team, the average runs per over scored against that team. In the event of a team being all out in less than its full quota of overs, the calculation of its net run rate shall be based on the full quota of overs to which it would have been entitled and not on the number of overs in which the team was dismissed.
SO - it’s the run rate the team scores minus the run rate scored against them, where the run rate is calculated as the total number of runs divided by the total number of balls (that could have been bowled).
Simple.
Fortunately, the majority of results tables make it easy for you, and show the relevant figures (and the NRR) all together. So you will see a “For” column (i.e., runs scored), an “Against” column (i.e., runs conceded) and if you’re really lucky, they’ll even tell you the number of balls faced so as to calculate the rate.
Cricinfo is one such helpful resource for the current World Cup:
| Super Eights | Mat | Won | Lost | Tied | N/R | Pts | Net RR | For | Against |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Australia | 5 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 10 | +2.298 | 1145/173.3 | 955/222.0 |
| Sri Lanka | 5 | 4 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 8 | +1.350 | 1279/241.1 | 966/244.2 |
| New Zealand | 5 | 4 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 8 | +1.267 | 1049/209.4 | 916/245.1 |
| South Africa | 5 | 3 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 6 | -0.199 | 1211/229.5 | 1285/235.0 |
| England | 5 | 2 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 4 | +0.079 | 1102/244.5 | 1054/238.2 |
| West Indies | 5 | 1 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 2 | -1.212 | 1065/238.1 | 1349/237.2 |
| Bangladesh | 5 | 1 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 2 | -1.431 | 784/218.0 | 925/184.0 |
| Ireland | 5 | 0 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.968 | 791/233.0 | 976/182.0 |
Lovely jubbly.
