Why the BCCI shouldn’t hire Gary Kirsten
Eat Cricket, Drink Cricket, Sleep Cricket
What’s up, folks? Don’t tell me you are OK with Kirsten being named India coach!
*He’s only 40. Some of the seniors in Team India are well past 35. Do you think Kirsten will be taken seriously? I think that’s doubtful.
*He brings no impressive coaching credentials. Has he even coached a national team ever? Maybe he could fit in as coach for, say, Kenya or Bangladesh, but we’re talking India here, gentlemen, India.
* He won’t get it, the Indian Board’s politics and bureaucracy. I would say, bring on someone like Bishan Singh Bedi who knows the ropes and understands how to tackle the board’s antics. I am afraid Kirsten might turn out a Chappell repeat.
* He’s got a young wife and two kids. Go figure.
I challenge you to come up with a really good reason to hire Kirsten. I bet you can’t. Oh, and don’t bring his batting record to my notice!

Challenge accepted! :)
Kirsten should be hired for the most elementary of reasons - he is from a cricket playing nation in the southern hemisphere.
We did New Zealand, we tried Australia.. That leaves South Africa - Kirsten’s home country.
QED.

Dinnie,
He should be hired, just to get UncleJ’s blood boiling.:)
Jokes apart, I think he is somewhat similar to Wright, someone who keeps to the background, which will suit our superstars.

And he loves India, doesnt he ? 1996 tour diary is a big example.

he being 40 something is an advantage to me…coz if you can get as recent a player as coach..he will understand the nances of modern game much better and wold respond accordingly than the one who has played quite a while ago…
i would prefer him the same way i preferred moody over GC (when they applied for indian coach) coz he is young, eager and hungry to prove his credential at highest level that too with india considering the challenges that comes with it…especially with the failure and bashing of GC…
also all things you have mentioned must have crossed his mind too and yet he is looking forward to the challenge is another reason to go for him…

Homer,
I am pretty unconvinced. What’s with the southern hemisphere? Notherners can’t coach?
Ottayan,
You are guessing. Got a really good reason?
Sam,
Only a girl could say that.(don’t be offended if you are not; we call my best friend Sam, too :) )
Pan,
What you say sounds good, and I understand what you mean to say about the guy’s good attitude. But (and it’s a big but), you’ve got to consider this:
Kirsten is a new kid in the coaching game. All rookies make mistakes. That’s no big deal. They learn by making mistakes. But the thing is: this “making mistakes and learning by them” part should have come before coaching India. Maybe, if he’d coached a state level team in his country or elsewhere, or better yet a national team, he’d be in a better position to tackle a team like India.
I’m afraid we’ll have to put up with his newbie mistakes.
But you folks can be pretty happy now– the deal is sealed, and he’s taking on as coach.
I’m moving on. No more Gary bashing. *Keeping fingers crossed*

I have come to the opinion that India really needs an Indian coach for a while. John Wright worked well, but they need to go back to home-grown coaches for a period of consolidation.

Din, i m surely a guy, but the question i asked was the one a girl asked an expert on NDTV. the expert was Siddhu.

Ottayan,
Well, let’s just hope your guess turns out to be right.
Stuart,
How nice to see you back! Hope you are feeling better now.
Kapil Dev has been India coach and his stint was less than stellar. But the idea of a local coach does sound good. How about Gavaskar or Siddhu, friends?
Sam,
I was kidding you. :)

what we all are doing is presuming…right now only thing going against him is experience…and on the other hand we can see how much mess made by an experienced guy here…
the lack of experience can sometimes work good coz he wont come with pre-conceived notions…and we all make mistakes…even experience ones…no??

May be, Pan, but don’t tell me GC had experience. He didn’t, as a coach.

Funny how things are turning out. Would you call this Kirsten’s diffidence? I have no clue.
Homer–now is the time! Apply for coach!
