Wondrous Oblivion
As cricket films go, there aren’t many. Perhaps the most famous is Lagaan and that’s really about it (as far as I’m aware). So when I stumbled over this film I felt it had to be worth a look. And it was. This film will really appeal to the British sensibility and anyone who remembers play “house cricket”, if you went to a posh school like I did. The film is sold as a cricket film, and about the life of a young lad who is cricket mad a real “statto”, despite being useless and forever being stuck at 3rd man, or worse… the scorer. However, the film is really a question of race, and some of the controversies and issues that existed in England in the years after the 2nd World War. But if you’re not adverse to that sort of thing, then it’s a really lovely film to watch, with plenty of moments that any cricketer can relate to, and, of course, a really happy ending.
It’s cutesy-wutesy, and it’s not really about the cricket, but nevertheless it’s an enjoyable happy film (with a serious storyline) which has some cricket in it, and it’s definitely worth watching. Stars Delroy Lindo of Gone in 60 Seconds fame. More at IMDB.
